Music Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds "Live at Luther College" If you like great songs and incredible musicianship these two will not disappoint. This double CD will surely soothe your soul and stir your spirit. A couple unforgettable tracks are 'The Christmas Song' and '#41'. Buy it at Amazon.com Buy it at Chapters.ca Dream With the Fishes Soundtrack Full of great songs by artists from exceptional jazz xylophonist Cal Tjader, to melodramatic folk rock by the legendary Nick Drake. A good movie to rent. It stars David Arquette and blends the soundtrack well into the story line. Buy it at Amazon.com Buy it at Chapters.ca Last Rights Townes Van Zandt This folk singer songwriter is unfamiliar to most, however many of the songs he wrote have made it to the charts via stars such as Emmy-Lou Harris and Willie Nelson. In 'Last Rights' Townes is interviewed and tells short stories as preludes to the tunes. In these pieces he reveals his soulful character. I found a new appreciation for the stories within songs because of Townes' uncanny, and extremely visceral, ability to paint a picture with his lyrics. You can't help but fall in love with his songs and stories. Buy it at Amazon.com Books Skin Tight Carl Hiaasen In the cold of the Northwest falls and winters, I like to escape to Hiaasen's whacky and wild crime fiction stories set in sunny Florida. An environmentalist by nature, Hiaasen weaves a twisted plot where an eccentric ex-senator, hell bent on preserving the fragile everglade environment, eventually reeks havoc on criminal land developers. Even though this theme runs throughout most of Hiaasen's books, it is merely the backdrop to an even crazier plot that has sleazy and dysfunctional criminals working a two-bit scam that goes awry. Look for a bad guy to lose an appendage only to have it replaced by an appliance or yard tool. In a word . . . fun! Buy it at Amazon.com Buy it at Chapters.ca Trinity Leon Uris 'Trinity' is a fascinating story of a boy and his family living in Northern Ireland in the 1800's. The protagonist is a skilled, capable and successful blacksmith who, despite his good nature, is driven to react against his aggressors. This is a passionate and powerful story with an insight to the turmoil that persists in Northern Ireland. Buy it at Amazon.com Buy it at Chapters.ca Anything by Michael Leunig Although Leunig's books are not novels and only verge on short stories, his illustrations and perspectives on love, gratitude, peace and happiness are worth having around any household, office and especially the bathroom. I highly recommend the 'Prayer Tree' as a Christmas stocking stuffer. A number of Michael Leunig's illustrations appear in this edition of WELL. Search Amazon.com Search Chapters.ca |
