Featured Poetry

Sometimes in our competitive culture, people develop a "healthier than thou" attitude. I once saw some verse written by William H. Carlyon about "The Healthiest Couple" who somehow missed the point of what wellness was all about. I took the liberty of rewriting the poem for use in some of my presentations.

The Perfect Couple
by Martin Collis

They're the fitness couple
For year 2001
They think wellness is too vital
To waste time having fun

He jogs for his heart
She likes bikes for her nerves
They assert themselves daily
With appropriate verve

They're slim and attractive
Always on the run
And SPF careful
When out in the sun

They drink Evian water
Their thirst to relieve
Although Evian backwards
Spells out naive

They fax and they modem
Their Internet friends
Cutting–edge zealots
Of technical trends

And when at the age
Of one hundred and three
They move into
Cyberspace infinity

There at the Pearly Gates
Saint Peter stands
She's a little surprised
They still use a man

He says, "Stop fitness family
You can't go through
Heaven's not structured
For people like you"

"But we followed the rules"
They said with a fright
"We're healthy, AIDs free
And incredibly bright."

"Sorry" says Peter.
"You're not on the roll–call.
You've missed the big picture
By thinking too small."

"Life's more than health habits
And following trends
There's purpose, and meaning
And thoughts which transcend.

You're deficient in joy
And that's really tragic.
You can figure the tricks
But don't understand magic.

You're fitter than fiddles
Sound as a bell
Self–righteous, intolerant
And boring as hell."
