Workplace Wellness

Small Business can be Big Fun
by Guy LeMasurier and Lindsey Grover

         DMG Financial Planning Services
Many large companies offer exercise and wellness programs to their employees, but small businesses shouldn't feel handcuffed by budget when trying to do the same. Small businesses benefit from Workplace Wellness, just as much as the large corporations, by allowing their employees to release stress in a positive manner and create closer working relationships with their co–workers. One company that has been a great example of working well is DMG Financial Planning Services in Victoria, BC—run by Darlene Gunter.

Darlene and her staff have done a great job in organizing and promoting fun outings and events. In addition to a yearly ski trip—to reward themselves for surviving RRSP season—the DMG group regularly bonds during games of mini–golf, bocce ball and other inexpensive recreational activities. One prime example took place a few weeks ago when DMG challenged Speakwell to an interoffice bowl–a–rama. We won't go into details about who won or lost (except that Guy beat Martin in the last game). This fun and affordable workplace adventure left us with things to laugh and joke about for the entire week. It was a great way for everyone to blow off a little steam. (A beer or two didn't hurt either.)

You need not confine a wellness plan to just employees. Inclusion of friends and family turn a simple wellness program into a regular, friendly get together that results in a workplace full of friends, not just co–workers. But be warned, if you decide to expand your wellness program to include other businesses, you may result in the addition of not only good contacts and great friends, but in the case of DMG versus Speakwell, a friendly grudge match at the bowling alley.

If you have any stories about small businesses doing unique wellness related programs, please let us know. Your business could be featured in the next issue of WELL.
